IPS Empress® Restorations

If you are in need of a dental restoration, it is important to know your options. Whether you need a crown, veneer, or inlay, the type of material you choose can significantly affect the outcome. At Acree & Isenhower Family Dentistry, we offer IPS Empress restorations to provide the very best in aesthetics and durability!

What is IPS Empress?

IPS Empress is a fabrication system that has proven to be the gold standard for highly esthetic, all-ceramic restorations. IPS Empress restorations are made in our dental laboratory by a skilled ceramist. IPS Empress is known for high-quality esthetics and clinically proven strength. The leucite glass-ceramic material is processed using computer-aided design (CAD) software and a milling press. During fabrication, a ceramic block is inserted into the press and sculpted to match your digital impression. Many patients find that IPS Empress ceramics scatters light naturally, mimic the translucency of tooth enamel, and look exactly like a real tooth!

We use IPS Empress to fabricate dental crowns, veneers, and inlays or onlays. During the procedure, Dr. Acree & Dr. Isenhower will prepare your tooth for the restoration by removing decayed material, or reshaping your enamel. After your tooth has been prepared, we will take a digital impression of the area and send it to the dental laboratory. The fabrication process may take a couple of weeks to complete. In the meantime, you may have to wear a temporary restoration to protect your tooth and improve esthetics. At the following appointment, Dr. Acree & Dr. Isenhower will permanently cement your final restoration into place.

IPS Empress restorations can last more than 15 years with the proper care. Like your natural teeth, you will need to brush and floss on a daily basis. Be sure to schedule checkups and professional cleanings at regular intervals. We advise you to avoid bad habits, such as smoking, nail-biting and chewing on pen caps.

Ceramic Crowns

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap used to repair teeth with extensive tooth decay or structural damage. The advantages of all-ceramic dental crowns include:
•  Superior esthetics—Ceramic dental crowns can produce results that are unbelievably lifelike and unmatched by other materials.
•  Biocompatibility—Ceramic materials are no more abrasive than natural enamel. Other materials can irritate the gum tissues and surrounding teeth.
•  Durability—Recent developments in dentistry have led to ultra-strong ceramics, like IPS Express.

Ceramic Veneers

A veneer is a thin shell that is bonded to the front of your visible teeth to improve cosmetics. The advantages of all-ceramic veneers include:
•  Superior esthetics—Ceramic veneers can be used to treat broken, misshapen, crooked, stained, and chipped teeth.
•  Durability—Ceramic veneers are stronger and last longer than resin composite alternatives.
•  Stain resistant—Although your veneers may lose some of their sheens, ceramic will resist permanent staining.
•  Conservative—Less of your natural enamel is removed during the porcelain veneer process.

Ceramic Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are used to restore decayed areas too large for a traditional filling, but too small to justify a full crown. The advantages of all-ceramic inlays and onlays include:
•  Superior esthetics—Your restoration will be tooth-colored and blend in with the rest of your natural tooth.
•  Durability—Ceramic inlays and onlays are resistant to staining and will not become discolored over time. They also provide a strong solution for moderate to large cavities.
•  Well-fitted—The restoration will fit well with the rest of your teeth. Ceramic inlays and onlays also result in less removal of tooth enamel.
