3-Shape Trios Digital Impression Scanner

At Acree & Isenhower Family Dentistry, our goal is to provide a great treatment experience. One of the ways we achieve that goal is by using cutting-edge technology. When an impression of your teeth needs to be made, we use the 3-Shape Trios Digital Impression Scanner instead of traditional impression materials.

A dental impression is an imprint of the teeth and soft tissues in the mouth. Impressions are used for diagnosis and treatment planning in many areas of dentistry, including:
•  Prosthodontics—the fabrication of tooth prostheses
•  Orthodontics—the diagnosis and correction of misaligned teeth and jaws
•  Oral and maxillofacial surgery—the surgical treatment of diseases, trauma, and abnormalities in the mouth, head, neck, throat, and jaw
•  Restorative dentistry—The correction of problematic teeth using crowns, bridges, and other restorations.
•  Pediatric dentistry—The oral health care of children, from infancy through the teenage years

What is the 3-Shape Trios Digital Impression Scanner?

The 3-Shape Trios Digital Impression Scanner is a tool we use to create fast, easy, and accurate impressions. The scanner is a wireless, hand-held device, with an intraoral camera that captures more than 3000 2D images per second. Using computer-aided design (CAD) software, the images are transformed into a three-dimensional model of your teeth and soft tissues. The 3D model is instantly displayed on a screen so you and Dr. Acree & Dr. Isenhower can see your impression being made in real time. The procedure only takes a few minutes and does not require the use of traditional impression materials.

Conventional Impressions Vs. Digital Impressions

A conventional impression requires the use of a goopy material that hardens to create a negative image of your teeth and gums. The impression is then used to create a 3D model or replica. During the procedure, the material is placed into a tray and then inserted into your mouth. You will be asked to bite down for several minutes while the material hardens. The accuracy of a conventional impression depends on the placement of the material, the control of moisture, and the removal of the tray. Many patients, especially those with a strong gag reflex, find the procedure to be uncomfortable and invasive.

A digital impression is less intrusive and avoids triggering your gag reflex. It typically takes a shorter amount of time to complete than a conventional impression. Conventional impressions can also have small distortions that result in poor treatment planning. The time and cost of refabricating a poorly-fit restoration can be quite extensive.

If a digital impression is not satisfactory, it can easily be retaken within minutes. The image can also be enlarged on the screen for a more detailed examination. We can review the image and check for inaccuracies, before it is sent to the dental laboratory, saving you time and money if an error occurs.
